Taylor Swift’s concert in Lisbon boosts demand for airline tickets to Europe

Some of Taylor Swift's "Swifties" are flying to Europe to witness her perform live as she continues the European leg of her massively successful Eras Tour.

Swift has already performed several gigs in Paris and Stockholm as part of the European phase, which began earlier this month, with additional events planned throughout the continent during the summer.

Local fans have been begging to attend the European shows, as have Americans, who have determined that traveling across the Atlantic Ocean is worthwhile.

As a result, several airlines have seen Swifties driving up demand for flights to European destinations surrounding her performances. CNN previously reported on the pattern for airlines United and Delta.

United Airlines has reported “increased demand” for summer flights to numerous European destinations on certain dates surrounding Swift’s tour there.

The airline reports some of the highest increases, ranging from nearly 20% more passengers for Dublin on June 27 and June 28 compared to a year earlier to about 45% more passengers for Milan on July 8 and July 9, with Swifties flying worldwide for gigs.

The demand for United flights to Lisbon, the next destination on Swift’s Eras Tour, has increased by almost 25% due to the busy Memorial Day travel season and her gigs this weekend, with Madrid indicating a similar increase, according to United.

Meanwhile, Delta is “going to be operating our largest-ever international summer schedule and is certainly seeing an increase in flying to Europe around her tour,” according to the Atlanta-based company.

“In addition to Taylor’s tour, many music fans will travel abroad to see artists like the Jonas Brothers, Metallica, Coldplay, and more perform across Europe,” the business stated in a statement. “This continues the trend of people going to the ends of the earth to see their favorite stars perform.”

American Airlines said that it was “seeing increased demand on certain transatlantic routes, including Zurich, Milan, Munich, Amsterdam, and Dublin, surrounding concert dates for the Taylor Swift Eras Tour.”

Some Swift fans have regarded Eras Tour tickets for European dates as less expensive than those for events in the United States.

A lady from New York City says that she and her daughter are coming to Madrid to see Swift, with concert tickets costing $350 apiece. She also said that she is paying for the flights using airline points and living with a cousin while in Spain.

Another source said that one of their family members was selling two additional floor seats to Swift’s May 29 concert in Madrid for $600 apiece. Swift has two appearances booked there.

According to past data, several Swifties have looked overseas to attend the Eras Tour.

As of late November, more than half of the tickets “purchased on StubHub and viagogo for all Taylor’s international shows in 2024, cumulatively, are from U.S. buyers,” according to StubHub’s “2023 Year in Live Experiences” report. It released the report in December.

In addition to positively impacting host communities’ economies, the Eras Tour has become a significant moneymaker thanks to ticket sales.

For the twelve months ended November 15th, Swift’s tour raked in $1.04 billion, according to Pollstar’s December report. There was a suggestion that the output may ultimately generate $2.165 billion.
