The trailer commences with Grande’s Glinda and Erivo’s Elphaba becoming housemates at Shiz University. Michelle Yeoh depicts the school’s headmistress. Grande’s voice is heard as she performs “Popular,” one of the musical’s most renowned songs, while Glinda is transforming Elphaba. Erivo delivers a segment of “Defying Gravity,” the dramatic composition that concludes the first act of the musical, following sequences that depict Elphaba grappling with her magical abilities.

“Wicked,” a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” narrates the events leading up to Dorothy’s iconic journey along the yellow brick road and Elphaba’s transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West, ostracized for her green skin. It explores the unlikely friendship and subsequent rivalry between Elphaba and Glinda, who initially met as students at Shiz University, and probes the central question: “Are people inherently wicked, or does wickedness come upon them?”

The trailer also showcases the splendor of Emerald City, featuring Jeff Goldblum’s Wizard of Oz and numerous flying monkeys. Using two songs from the musical was noteworthy, contrasting with the marketing approach of some recent Broadway adaptations, which minimized their musical origins. An orchestral version of “Defying Gravity” also accompanies the new visuals.

Elphaba finds out that the Wizard doesn’t really have any magical abilities, which turns the tables on her. The consequence, tensions rise throughout Oz. Elphaba responds, “The Wizard should fear me,” after the Wizard proclaims, “The best way to unite people is to give them a formidable enemy.”

Directed by Jon M. Chu, known for “Crazy Rich Asians” and “In the Heights,” this adaptation will be released in two parts. The cast further includes Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Shiz University’s headmaster, Ethan Slater as Boq, and Bowen Yang as Pfannee. The first part is set to debut on November 27, with the sequel scheduled for November 26, 2025.

Before the trailer’s release, Universal presented a featurette titled “Passion Project,” where Chu and his leading performers shared their experiences making the films. Grande, recalling her childhood memory of watching the original Broadway cast of “Wicked” at age 10, mentioned feeling an instant connection and vowed to honor her role as Glinda. Erivo, becoming emotional, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “It’s been a long journey, and I’m truly thankful. I never imagined being part of something like this.”

“Wicked” features additional performances by Bowen Yang, Ethan Slater, and Peter Dinklage. The first episode of the two-part Broadway musical adaptation, which Jon M. Chu is directing, describes the friendship between the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.
