“Usher’s Speech at BET Awards: Victoria Monét and Tyla Also Win Big at 2024 Event”

Dozens of singers took the stage at the 2024 BET Awards, and the evening was full of unforgettable moments and exquisite performances. Unfortunately, there was a glitch during Usher’s acceptance speech for the Lifetime Achievement Award; the audio from the broadcast was interrupted for much of his comments.

The audio problems and BET’s apology to Usher were addressed in a statement that BET sent to ET on Monday.

“Celebrating global icon Usher on our stage with a star-studded tribute and having him accept his award with a heartfelt speech was an honor,” according to the network. “Due to an audio malfunction during the LIVE telecast, portions of his speech were inadvertently muted.”

As much as we appreciate Usher’s support of Culture’s Biggest Night, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience he may have caused. A complete, uninterrupted speech is available to fans on all BET platforms as well as tonight’s encore on BET, the statement said.

Usher, 45, was presented with the coveted prize towards the conclusion of the almost four-hour awards event. The presentation was preceded by a video tribute and a 16-minute performance by a host of A-listers singing some of his most famous songs.

Among the many artists included in the musical medley are Childish Gambino, Summer Walker, Coco Jones, Marsha Ambrosius, Chloe Bailey, Tinashe, Victoria Monét, Teyana Taylor, and Latto. You can also hear their individual performances.

Everything went well up until Babyface and L.A. Reid handed Usher his trophy, at which point he accepted it. Following his censorship for profanity in the first minutes of his address, the audio from the whole broadcast—not just Usher’s mic, but all audio—went silent for a few minutes, then briefly came back on.

This meant that much of his speech went unnoticed by spectators and was only enjoyed by those there. But the parts of his speech that got airtime were powerful messages of acceptance and forgiveness.

The singer reflected on his formative years, during which he struggled to find his own identity after his father’s departure and Usher’s subsequent upbringing in isolation.

Trying to make sense of a name that a guy gave her but then abandoned because he didn’t love her, Usher pondered deeply. “Or at least that was my perception of it because I had to live long enough in order to understand that you have to have a forgiving heart in order to understand the true pitfalls and hardships of a Black man in America.”

Usher accepted the trophy for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist before being presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Usher said on the blue carpet before Sunday’s awards presentation that he was excited to have his family there to share in the moment. The artist brought his kids, Naviyd Raymond, 15, and Usher “Cinco” Raymond V, 16, to the event with his mother, Jonnetta Patton, and wife, Jennifer Goicoechea, whom he married in February. Tameka Foster and Usher, who is now divorced, have two teenage boys together. Usher and his wife have a boy named Sire, who is two years old, and a daughter named Sovereign, who is three years old.

It is an incredible feeling to be able to spend this time with my loved ones. We put in a lot of time and effort, and they’ve given me a lot of support and let me do what I love, Usher said. We’re commemorating the last sixteen years of their lives, as well as the forty or so years of my own, my mother’s life, and everything that she has contributed to the occasion that I will be hosting this evening. It makes me pleased to be able to honor everyone who contributed to this event.

That is where my dad came from. He was very decision-making. Staying away was one of his many decisions, and it was likely both a blessing and a curse for me, Usher said. “That’s part of the reason why I say this is the year of the father, where all the fathers have got to stand up for their sons and daughters and be the man that they need to be for them.”

“Everyone, you must be ready to forgive. The one who is guiltless gets to throw the first stone. Forgiveness is a quality you must possess. You have to be willing to be vulnerable, he said. Listen, you’re standing before a guy who had to forgive another man who was never there. Behold the creation I crafted with it! Take a look at what I brought about. That is the essence. We are defined by it. That is the essence of our gender. Everyone, I am grateful.

According to an interview Usher gave to ET, he is more concerned with expanding his “kingdom” than amassing awards.

Being first, queen, or king is something that a lot of people strive for. According to Usher, his lifelong goal is to establish a kingdom while simultaneously releasing groundbreaking music and other cultural products that he believes the world needs. “I’m gonna tour and after that, we’ll see what happens.”

What did Usher win at the Bet Awards?

Usher actually won two awards at the 2024 BET Awards:

Lifetime Achievement Award: This award recognizes Usher’s extensive and impact career in music. Some questioned if he was too young for this prestigious honor, but it demonstrates his effect.
