“Tyla at 2024 BET Awards: Makes the Crowd ‘Jump’ with Debut Performance”

On Sunday, June 30, at Culture’s Biggest Night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the 22-year-old South African singer performed her current single, “Jump,” alongside Gunna and Skillibeng.

The “Water” performer, dressed in a brown two-piece bra and skirt combination and black thigh boots, ramped up the heat as she delivered her song from behind a cage packed with dancers painted like a gigantic tiger — a subtle tribute to her devoted audience, the Tygers.

Gunna and Skillibeng eventually joined her onstage to rap their rhymes, and the emerging singer concluded her energetic concert — which also paid respect to her Johannesburg heritage — with her famous “Water” dance routine.

Tyla garnered four BET Award nominations this year, including Best New Artist and Best Foreign Talent.

Her most recent appearance follows the cancellation of her inaugural concert tour in March, which coincided with the release of her self-titled debut album. At the time, she acknowledged that she was suffering from the long-term ramifications of an accident.

“As much as I would have preferred to deal with this discreetly, I believe it is necessary that I share what I have with you now. Tyla writes, “For the past year, I have been silently suffering from an injury that has tragically worsened.” “I’ve seen doctors and specialists with high hopes but the pain has only become more agonizing as has the severity of the situation.”

She said, “I’m very sad to have to announce this, but as of right now, I won’t be able to continue with the tour. After consultation with medical specialists, it became evident that extending any festival or tour dates would threaten my long-term health and safety.

Tyla previewed in an interview later that month what fans may anticipate when she returned to the stage. “Obviously, what happened unfortunately happened, but the plans were there,” according to her.

“We were giving them an experience rather than simply a spectacle, which I like. We constantly strive to do things that are unique and fascinating, or that I believe others would want to see. When we resume work on the trip, it will undoubtedly be part of the plan. “We have so many ideas, and it’s going to be amazing,” the celebrity said.

Tyla earned her first Grammy Award in February for best African Music Performance for “Water,” her breakout tune that peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Reflecting on the “surreal” occasion, she said, “Hearing my name and being able to walk up on that platform and give an entire speech was insane, particularly given my age and so early in my career. I didn’t anticipate it, but I’m happy it occurred. It is history. It’s a huge deal at home. “I couldn’t be happier.”

The 2024 BET Awards will be telecast live on June 30 at 8 p.m. ET/PT from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
