Taylor Swift’s UK Eras Tour: Lana Del Rey Reveals Taylor’s Unmatched Drive for Pop Stardom

Both Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey have achieved mainstream popularity in ways that are authentic to their talent but in very different ways

Del Rey’s path led to a headline performance at Coachella earlier this year, when she arrived on the back of a motorcycle. Swift, on the other hand, is on the most recent leg of her career-spanning stadium tour. The couple has performed on the music and Grammy Awards stages together, but they’ve also had more private discussions about their long-term ambitions.

“She’s told me so many times that she wants it more than anyone,” Del Rey recently told BBC News, referring to Swift’s status as a global pop sensation. “And how great that she is receiving precisely what she wants. She’s motivated, and I believe it has paid off.”

The Eras tour continues later tonight in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Swift has sold out three straight nights. The tour is set to continue until December, with additional events in Europe and North America. Swift discussed the tour’s length when she was voted Time’s Person of the Year last year, stating, “I wanted to play a show that was longer than they ever thought it would be because that makes me feel good leaving the stadium.”

She continued: “Every day, I would run on the treadmill, singing the entire set list out loud,” she said. “rapid for rapid songs; jog or fast stroll for slow tunes. Then I did three months of dancing instruction to get it into my bones. I wanted to be so over-rehearsed that I could laugh with the audience without losing my line of thought.”

Swift recently revamped the whole concert by adding a portion devoted to The Tortured Poets Department, her 31-track eleventh studio album and eighth full-length release in half the time, if you include the four Taylor’s Version recordings from her previous studio albums. Del Rey sang “Snow on the Beach” from Midnights.

Swift lauded Del Rey in a 2019 address at Billboard’s Women in Music event. “Lana Del Rey, one of my favorite artists of this decade, has been harshly criticized.”Throughout their early career, and then gradually but steadily, she became, in my view, the most important performer in pop,” she said. “Her vocal stylings, her lyrics, her aesthetic—they’ve been echoed and repurposed in every corner of music.”

She continued, “She just kept making art.” And that example should serve as motivation for all of us to remember that forward momentum is the only path ahead. We should not allow hurdles like criticism to stifle the creative impulses that propel us.”
