The reggae-punk band’s latest track, “Feel Like That,” features vocals from Scott Woodruff of Stick Figure and contributions from the band’s original members, Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh. This release follows their viral Coachella set with Jakob, 28, and comes nearly 28 years after Bradley’s passing due to a heroin overdose on May 25, 1996.

“This song came together naturally. My uncles and I have always wanted to collaborate with artists from various modern music scenes,” Jakob said in a press release. “But hearing my voice alongside my dad’s voice gives it that classic Sublime sound while stepping into the modern era.”

“SoCal music is my family’s pride and joy, and our family grows every day. ‘Feel Like That’ captures this new feeling, and we hope it will be the first of many,” Nowell added. “Who’s next to join the family?”

The new track’s producers include Grammy-winning contributors Woodruff and Johnny Cosmic and the band’s longtime collaborator Michael “Miguel” Happoldt. Woodruff mentioned that they created the track using old recordings from a 1996 jam session between Bradley, Wilson, and Gaugh.

“Sublime inspired me to create music; being part of this track is a full circle moment in many ways. From the vault to the fans, this one’s been a long time coming!” Woodruff stated this in a press release.

Jakob also expressed that it was a “beautiful thing” to honor his late father in the song. “My dad has a verse, and then I have a verse, and Stick closes out the song,” he said.

Bassist Wilson shared his excitement about the track’s release, noting they felt “blessed” to have retained their old recordings and to have an ideal outtake ready for use.

“Timing is everything, and I believe it couldn’t be more perfect! Hearing Brad and Jakob sing together on the same track is awesome. This song is surely going to set the summer mood,” he wrote in an email to the publication.

Sublime originally skyrocketed to fame in the mid-1990s with hits like “Santeria” and “What I Got,” which fused punk, reggae, ska, and funk — and continued to achieve radio success even after Bradley Nowell’s death.

In a press statement, drummer Gaugh joked, “Good things come to those who wait… and wait… and wait…”

“We’ve waited too damn long!!! Now hear this!!! This is the good sh*t that makes you ‘FEEL LIKE THAT!'” Gaugh wrote.

The band is also preparing for a North American tour, performing at various U.S. festivals, including the Point Break Festival in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the San Diego Bayfest in California, and concluding at the Closer to the Sun Festival in Riviera Maya, Mexico. In addition, a Sublime biopic was announced in 2022. The project will have Gaugh, Wilson, Jakob, and his mother Troy as executive producers under the direction of Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence and written by Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy. The release date has yet to be set.

Jakob previously discussed the band’s reunion and taking on his father’s duties with DateWithHistory. He claimed that both his father and the supporters of the original trio were the driving forces behind his decision.

“People have been asking me to join the band since I was 12, and it was something I never wanted to do,” he told DateWithHistory in April. “I always told myself I’d never go the Sublime route.”

“It’s emotionally complicated. I didn’t want to overshadow a deceased family member,” he added, later noting, “…I think stepping into this role has brought me closure. The story feels complete.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the backstory behind “Feel Like That”?

“Feel Like That” is based on the 1996 demo track “Eireen,” which was formed during a jam session at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Studio in Austin, Texas. Bradley Nowell, Eric Wilson, and Bud Gaugh of Sublime improvised the tune, which had humorous and dub influences. Now, 28 years later, the song is completely realized as “Feel Like That (featuring Bradley Nowell).” It features extra vocals from Stick Figure’s Scott Woodruff and Bradley Nowell’s son, Jakob Nowell. The track, credited to Sublime x Stick Figure, was created using samples from the original “Eireen” session.

Who sings on “Feel Like That”?

The song has vocals from both Bradley Nowell and his son, Jakob Nowell. Jakob’s involvement is especially heartbreaking since he collaborated with his late father on the same tune. The combination of their voices produces a wonderful and nostalgic experience for Sublime fans.
