Crazy Town frontman Shifty Shellshock dies at 49

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner verified that the musician died at his residence on Monday, June 24th

The lead singer of Crazy Town, Shifty Shellshock, passed away at the age of 49.

The musician, whose given name is Seth Binzer, passed away on June 24 at his residence in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s website. The medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death for the “Butterfly” singer.

When asked for a comment, a Binzer representative took some time to answer.

Binzer started his career in the music business in 1992, with fellow singer, rapper, and band member Bret “Epic” Mazur. According to Variety and Deadline, the couple created the Brimstone Sluggers in Los Angeles in 1995, which later evolved into the rock band Crazy Town.

Crazy Town’s 1999 first album, The Gift of Game, was co-written and co-produced by the aforementioned Rust Epique, James Bradley Jr., Doug Miller, Adam Goldstein, and Antonio Lorenzo “Trouble” Valli.

The band’s third album hit, “Butterfly,” shot them to stardom and became an anthem of the 2000s; it was even used in the Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton film Something’s Gotta Give.

According to a report, the duo split up when their second album, Darkhorse, did not get the same amount of critical praise. According to the publication, the band reformed in 2015 under the moniker Brimstone Sluggers before becoming Crazy Town X when Mazur quit in 2017.

Binzer also attempted a solo career after the band split the first time. He released the album Happy Love Sick in 2004 and teamed with English music producer Paul Oakenfold on the song “Starry Eyed Surprise,” which was published in 2002 and peaked at No. 6 on the UK music charts.

However, the singer struggled with drug usage throughout his career and appeared on the VH1 series Celebrity Rehab and Sober House. He was previously hospitalized in 2012 after losing consciousness and slipping into a coma before recovering, according to Variety.

Binzer was arrested the same year on allegations of violence and drug possession, according to a TMZ piece from the time. According to Variety, he was also jailed for DUI in 2022 and had a confrontation with Crazy Town guitarist Bobby Reeves after one of their gigs in 2023.

Following the news, some admirers paid respect to the Crazy Town rocker’s farewell Instagram postings. On an April 27 message, a user wrote, “RIP, old buddy… I remember you most as a youngster on a skateboard, with the whole world in front of you. Sending love to your family.

Another person said, “I’m speechless… Rest in peace, my childhood hero. “I am going to miss you.”
