Neil Young and Crazy Horse Cancel Tour Dates Due To Illness

On Wednesday, Neil Young announced that he and his longstanding backup band Crazy Horse would not be performing at any further dates on their current tour. This is because “a couple of us” had been sick since their last performance in May. He remained vague about whether he was one of the victims.

Shows that were scheduled to air up to three months from now have been canceled. This will have an impact on Young’s seven July gigs in Canada as well as his three September shows in the US at the Hollywood Bowl, Ohana Fest in southern California, which is fronted by Eddie Vedder, and Bourbon and Beyond Festival in Kentucky.

According to a statement posted on Young’s website, the band members—who remained anonymous—fell sick shortly after their most recent performance—May 22 at Clarkston, Michigan’s Pine Knob Music Theatre—more than a month ago.

“The Love Earth Tour has been a great experience for us so far,” Young started his address to supporters. “Great audience and music.” WE HAD A BLAST!”

He went on, “When a few of us became ill beyond Detroit’s Pine Knob, we had to halt. We are still not fully recovered, so our wonderful tour will take a significant unplanned break. We’ll endeavor to make up some of the missed dates when we’re ready to rock again! We understand that many of you made travel plans, and we apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for being understanding and patient.”

Young determined that “health is number one.” We hope to continue performing and releasing albums for both you and ourselves. Crazy Horse sends love and gratitude to all of you. Neil, Micah, Ralph, and Billy “Love the Earth.”

Young’s statement appeared to leave open the possibility that tickets would be valid for some dates at a rescheduled time, but there was no guarantee. Young’s representative stated that they were awaiting word on additional information for ticket holders.

Despite Young’s silence on the matter, it appeared like Crazy Horse’s rhythm section—80-year-old drummer Ralph Molina and bassist Billy Talbot—were struggling to keep up with the physical demands of the two-hour set. As a result, many of the band’s songs were played at slower tempos than their studio recordings during last month’s performance in New York.

As of this writing, tickets for the Hollywood Bowl performance are still available on Ticketmaster, but the event’s absence from various sites on the Bowl website seems to suggest that it has gone the way of the other events. No one will be blaming these cancellations on low sales. A seating plan for the Bowl performance reveals that only tickets in the extreme back are still available.

A representative for Ohana Fest cited a social media post that read: “We are disappointed to inform you that Neil Young and Crazy Horse will no longer be appearing at Ohana Festival 2024. Please remain tuned for an update on the lineup as soon as possible; in the meanwhile, we wish the band a fast recovery.” Bourbon & Beyond sent a similar message, stating to “stay tuned for a replacement announcement.”

Young fans who are disappointed by the cancellations might take comfort in a much-anticipated CD release on Friday: “Early Daze,” a compilation of previously unheard songs performed by Young with Crazy Horse in 1969.

Will Neil Young ever tour again?

Neil Young and Crazy Horse have been on their Love Earth Tour since April 2024. However, owing to recent illnesses among band members, they have been forced to cancel numerous gigs, including those in San Diego, Phoenix, and New Orleans. Unfortunately, the remaining 2024 tour dates have also been canceled, with plans to reschedule in the future. Interestingly, Neil Young has said that he would only tour again if it can be done in a sustainable manner, stressing environmental concerns. So, although the current tour has had some hiccups, Young’s devotion to sustainability may impact future touring selections.
