Bright Eyes Announce New Album ‘Five Dice’ with ‘Bells and Whistles’ Teaser

The band Bright Eyes has released an album after a four-year hiatus. The release date for Five Dice, All Threes is September 20. Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, and Nate Walcott will be joined on their forthcoming tenth studio album by Cat Power, Matt Berninger of the National, and Alex Orange Drink of the So So Glos.

Along with the album announcement, the band released the first single, “Bells and Whistles,” as well as a music video for the song, which depicts them performing on stage, a magical photo booth sprouting showgoers, and a bar brawl.

Omaha, Nebraska, the band’s hometown, served as the setting for the music video directed by Josh Boone. “This is a song about the myriad minor aspects in life that may seem trivial, frivolous, or ephemeral at the moment, but ultimately shape your fate.”It’s also kind of a whistle while you work scenario,” Oberst stated in a statement about the song.

The new song is described as “a rollicking, anthemic bop that gallivants from N.Y. to L.A., its lacerating lyrics referencing Banksy, Princess Diana, the Mets, Silverlake stalwart bar Edendale, music biz pitfalls, and Kevin Costner’s greatest film,” according to a press release.

Bright Eyes will also go on a tour in support of their new album, beginning in New York on September 19 and stopping in Oakland, Chicago, Omaha, Oakland, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas before traveling to Europe in November.

Five Dice, All Threes, the band’s follow-up to Down In the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, will include headline performances at Riot Fest and Best Friends Forever festivals. In a 2020 Rolling Stone interview on their final record, Oberst discussed his own mortality and creativity. “I really believe that being youthful at heart and maintaining a love for life are key factors.

”Once you lose that, you get old really quickly,” he added. “So for me, it’s a continual worry to avoid falling into a gloomy, pessimistic attitude. And part of it is being around younger people, or just different people, and keeping an open mind. Nothing is more aggravating than an elderly, cynical rocker who believes they’ve seen it all. “I would never want to be that.” Tracklist for Five Dice, All Threes: 1. “Five Dice”
