However, Expedia, an online travel agency, has identified traveling across continents to attend concerts, a trend they have named “tour tourism,” as becoming increasingly popular, particularly evident during Beyoncé’s Renaissance world tour.
Several North American admirers planning to travel internationally for the Eras Tour expressed that the stricter limitations on ticket prices and resales in Europe rendered the costs of attending a Swift concert abroad as affordable, if not cheaper, than seeing her perform in their own country.
Melanie Fish, representing Expedia as their spokesperson and travel expert, shared that people often contemplate their spending decisions. She explained, “People pause to consider whether they should invest $1,500 to attend a concert by their favorite artist in Miami. Alternatively, they realize that the same amount could cover the cost of a concert ticket, a return flight, and a three-night hotel stay.”
Jennifer Warren, a 43-year-old residing in St. Catharines, within Ontario’s Niagara region, shared her ordeal with her 11-year-old son. They are avid fans of Swift but could not find tickets in the US at a price Jennifer deemed reasonable. Unfazed, Jennifer, together with her husband, chose to incorporate their quest for tickets into a European trip. Ultimately, they secured seats in Hamburg, Germany.
“Stepping out allows you to explore the world while enjoying your favorite artists or performers live—there are multiple benefits,” commented Warren, who serves as the director of research and innovation at a mutual insurance firm.
She managed to get three VIP tickets near the stage through sheer, what she termed, “brute-force dumb luck,” for which each cost 600 euros ($646). Soon after, Swift unveiled six November performances in Toronto, a drivable distance from Warren’s residence. Warren mentioned that the most distant seats in the venue are being sold on secondary markets like Viagogo for as much as 3,000 Canadian dollars ($2,194).
